The best way to realize one’s self value especially needs the insight into the person’s talents and gifts.
That is also to say to know a person’s strengths and weaknesses.
And often our strength could be weakened because of lacking awareness and self confidence (not the only reason, just for instance).
Our weaknesses can be strengths under certain circumstances.
However if we don’t know and acknowledge our weaknesses, not only won’t we have further growth but also the false cognitive information in our head will impede our gains in daily work because of inaccurate self positioning and evaluation. This could lead to less ideal performance, inefficient teamwork, less wise judgment and interpersonal conflicts regarding ideas as it may hurt the ego.
The tricky part is we think we know ourselves but we don’t actually.
In reality most people don’t know their own strengths and weaknesses.
And it takes years and lifetime to know/Shape oneself.
As we experience and we find who we are.
Some qualities are defined by ourselves. Some are given as natural talent when born.
The most cost effective and comfortable way is to do something with which you have a talent at. That is not necessarily what you have learned before or even done before. This creates great value for oneself and also for a team.
The nature of Knowing oneself/Thyself being a dynamic process means that this is a discovery journey.
But it is rather difficult for someone who’s close minded to discovery something new along the way.
Some people change while others choose to remain the same. Have they all reached the level where they have found the final result of who they are? Not for certain.
However at least Being open to change gives opportunity to discover and give new definitions on everything.
If it is put under the context of a team, the team as a whole also bears the risks and costs of the journey, and also gains together with the members when the true value could be discovered.
To understand ego is to indeed prepare oneself to start the journey of discovery.
We only mentioned the nice part of the discovery superficially.
The dark side is when we try to gain the insights of ourselves, inevitably, we are gonna face the ugliest, stupidest part of ourselves: the ones that help shape our weaknesses.
An environment that provides the chance with awareness on self discovery journey also may juggle between the bright side and the dark side.
For the ship to sail far and smoothly, from time to time, it’s our own responsibility to remind ourselves of both sides on this journey, what really happens and help everyone to understand what we are facing and learn to adapt to changes and challenges openly.
